A special exhibition from the Oundle School Archive is currently on display at the Yarrow Gallery from 8–15 November, sharing the wartime stories of the Oundle School community both at home and away.
The exhibition offers a thoughtful exploration of what life at Oundle was like during this extraordinary period highlighting the personal experiences of Old Oundelians. Through a collection of original documents, artefacts, photographs and personal accounts, visitors are invited to step back in time and discover how resilience, creativity and a sense of shared purpose defined Oundle during the war years.
“Through photographs, letters, diaries, and personal accounts, this exhibition invites us to pause and reflect — not only on individual stories, but on the collective memory they shape. These artefacts bridge generations, reminding us that remembrance is not passive: it is an act of honour, empathy, and understanding. In revisiting these histories, we renew our gratitude and reaffirm our responsibility to remember those who gave so much for the world we inherit today.”
Dominic Oliver, Head
The exhibition stands as a tribute to the members of the Oundle community who served, fought and gave their lives during the War, and to all those who contributed tirelessly to the effort at home. Within the School’s Memorial Book, more than 2,000 Oundelians are listed, with 272 obituaries—each one a personal story of courage and sacrifice. The testimony and sheer numbers can seem overwhelming, particularly when we remember that this community is only one of the many thousands in the UK and across the world who share a parallel chronicle of sacrifice and loss.
“It has been an honour to work on this exhibition. We are very proud to have been able to bring their incredible stories into the lives of this generation.”
Elspeth langsdale, school archivist
This project has been a true community collaboration, connecting the then and now, bringing together contributions from Laxton Junior School, Oundle School Art, the History, English, and Music Production Departments, as well as our regular Community Action volunteers, Old Oundelians, and their families.
The Yarrow Gallery is open daily from 11am – 5pm Monday – Saturday and 2pm – 5pm on Sunday.
