Oundelians do! They seize the opportunities around them and make the most of all that is on offer, inside the classroom and out. Oundle Scholars epitomise that ethos: pupils who throw themselves into life, give of their best to the benefit of others, and crucially, set the example for their peers to follow.

Hear from Andrew Mansergh as he explains what an Oundle Scholarship has to offer and learn more about the pupils who thrive within it.

What is an Oundle Scholarship?

Talented pupils who have a genuine interest and ability in two or more of our Scholarship disciplines are invited to consider applying for an Oundle Scholarship. An Oundle Scholarship recognises and celebrates the qualities we look for in all our pupils: high academic standards together with significant commitment to the wider life of the School.

Enthusiasm, commitment and curiosity characterise an Oundle Scholar. They are pupils with a real energy and zest for School life. They commit to activities, particularly in the co-curricular sphere, and persevere until
completion: whether that be in a cast upon the stage, an ensemble, a sports team (not always in the A or 1st team), or a project in the workshops. They exhibit an excitement and love of learning, not just in the classroom, but of new skills, ideas and experiences.

Our commitment to our Scholars

Our Oundle Scholarship programme spans the whole co-curriculum and exposes Scholars to the wide range of opportunities around them, sparking new interests and encouraging early participation in the breadth of Oundle life. Oundle Scholars are offered access to elements of the Academic Scholarship Programme, as well as to many of the enrichment opportunities provided for Scholars in their two areas of particular interest.

  • During the Third Form (Year 9) we run a programme of activities to engage and inspire Oundle Scholars. Gathering twice every term, pupils are exposed to the wealth of opportunities on offer, with the Heads of Sport, Music, Drama and Debating all running bespoke sessions to seize and engage the pupils.
  • We also run an Oundle Scholars trip to reward their engagement and encourage further participation.
  • Where they have a particular talent in a main co-curricular discipline, we ensure that Oundle Scholars are given regular access to the specialist Scholar programmes, for example Music, Drama or Sport.

We look for enthusiasm, teamwork, leadership potential and that indefinable spark and zest for life.

It is an Oundle Scholar’s personal characteristics and qualities that define them, as much as any skill or talent. In time they are likely to be heavily represented on our Prefect body and Heads of Houses and often have leadership responsibilities or are prefects at their current school.

An Academic Scholarship is all about the life of the mind. These are usually the pupils who are already academic leaders in their year group, not just in terms of their performance but also in their willingness and desire to read widely and demonstrate a level of intellectual curiosity that inspires and proves infectious to their peers. They’re likely to do well across a wide range of academic subjects and be the first to put their hands up to take part in academic competitions, both internal and external.

An Oundle Scholarship is more about general involvement and attitude to opportunity – these are pupils who throw themselves into life, give of their best to the benefit of others, and crucially, set the example for their peers to follow. They usually have a wide range of interests and commit to activities, particularly across the co-curriculum – without necessarily excelling in any one particular sphere.

Subject specific Scholarships, such as Sport or Drama, recognise and reward dedication, talent and performance in a specific discipline.

Our assessment programme is held over two days at Oundle in February/March and involves a broad range of opportunities for potential Scholars to exhibit the qualities we seek.

Assessment includes social and communication skills, mental dexterity, and the ability to influence and lead others positively by argument and example. There are formal and informal activities, as well as a one-to-one interview with a member of staff. It should not be a daunting experience, and candidates should come away having enjoyed a taste of Oundle life. Examples of activities include a Drama workshop at the Stahl Theatre, an introduction to Debating, a Sports session, and a Leadership exercise with the CCF.

All Scholarship applicants are encouraged to apply for means-tested bursaries should they need financial support. We are proud that over one hundred pupils at Oundle are supported with bursaries and we are continually working to increase our Bursary Endowment Fund.
