Although it was not a competitive match, the 24hr Swim for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity certainly had a winning outcome, with £5066 raised over the course of the event. Fourteen Upper Sixth Form pupils took on the challenge to swim 196km over the course of the event.
It was not an easy target. Pupils swam in pairs, each completing between six and eight 30-minute windows of swimming. Each pupil gave their all, and with the help of our supportive school community, a huge total of 214km over 8582 lengths was achieved.
Charlie Patton (Sn 02) and his young family were present at the start of the swim. He had been supported by the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity through his battle with lung cancer, and the family were deeply touched by the efforts made to facilitate the event, and the good will toward such an important and personal cause.
The support the pupils received was fantastic. Supporters among staff and pupils, and even the 1st XV rugby team, accompanied the pupils alongside the charity swim lane, gave encouragement, and kept motivation levels high.
Of special mention, Olivia (W) and Rupert (L) led on organising, and Alfie (C) took it upon himself to complete 800 lengths individually and keep the total ticking along through the early hours of the morning.
