It was a memorable afternoon at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre on Thursday 23 April as the U16 boys’ hockey squad competed in the England Hockey National Knockout Shield Final. Their opponents Claremont School had enjoyed a high scoring run to the final, so on paper it promised to be a mouthwatering match up.

The Final did not disappoint with Claremont racing into a 2-0 lead within the first 15 minutes. However, field goals from Toby and Joe followed by a penalty corner scramble finished off by Josh on 33 minutes, saw Oundle head into the half time break 3-2 up. And yet, it was the free scoring Claremont who fought back twice in the third quarter to extend their lead to 4-3 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Going into the final minute of the match, Oundle still trailed until a series of re-awarded penalty corners saw Barney find the equaliser. The drama was still not over as the final whistle sounded, Claremont won one final penalty corner and scored in overtime to take claim the title and steal the win from Oundle.

Despite the result, it was a wonderful contest between two evenly matched sides and a contest which will be well remembered.

Many congratulations must go to the entire squad on reaching the national final. This is a significant achievement for any team, in any sport and special note of thanks goes to the team’s loyal band of supporters and in particular, to Mr Talbot and Mr Foad for all their coaching, support and commitment during this outstanding cup campaign.
