How aerodynamic design engineers are inspired by nature
Dr Ben Evans from Swansea University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering explores how computational methods and design optimisation inspired by evolutionary processes in nature have been used for the aerodynamic design of everything from the world’s fastest car through to a hypersonic spaceplane. The talk will explain the basic principles of Computational Fluid Dynamics, or virtual wind tunnel testing, and how modern evolutionary algorithms, inspired by the breeding behaviour of cuckoos in nature, are being used to design more efficient and environmentally vehicles for the road and the skies.
