The department

The Physics Department is a very large and extremely successful department. Housed in the Needham building, the department benefits from 10 full time Physics teachers and the support of a highly-experienced team of three technicians. There are seven fully-equipped laboratories, a preparation room, a shared office space, a student work room, and a project room that houses our Subsonic Wind Tunnel. The department members are all passionate about teaching Physics and we work collaboratively to ensure that pupils of all abilities achieve their full potential in the subject.

Pupils aged 11-18 are all taught by a specialist in Physics, with approximately 175 of the 200 pupils completing IGCSE Physics (28% achieving grade 9 and 90% achieving grades 9-7). The remaining pupils take the Double Award qualification. On average, over the past five years, 60 pupils chose to study Physics at A-level, with results last year of 39% A* grades and 90% achieving A* – B grades. There is a strong track record of Oxbridge success in Physics-related subjects, with five pupils on average successfully achieving places each year, and lots more going on to study Physics or Engineering at other top universities both in the UK and in the USA.

The department provides stimulating and enriching extracurricular activities. Every year we enter large numbers of pupils into the British Physics Olympiad competitions. There is a thriving pupil-led Science Society that sees pupils deliver talks to their peers and invite external speakers to give lectures. The department also runs a non-examined course entitled: An Introduction to Aerodynamics. Participants on the course can use the School’s wind tunnel and the other plentiful and wide-ranging resources available in the Partick Engineering Centre to investigate a nominated topic.

The town

Oundle is a historic market town in Northamptonshire, famous for its beautiful Georgian streets and impressive limestone buildings. The town has a spirited cultural life, with an annual international festival, literature festival, and frequent performances of nationally touring shows at the School’s Stahl theatre. The town has a range of independent shops, coffee houses, pubs and eateries. Encircled by the river Nene, the town is also blessed to be surrounded by beautiful countryside with many picturesque villages nearby.
