Sailing
The Oundle School Sailing Club has 19 fast two-person dinghies with a trapeze and a conventional spinnaker; 13 Topper dinghies, ideal for beginners; one Laser dinghy, for more advanced sailors; and three rescue boats.
During the Trinity Quarter we accommodate all standards of sailors from complete beginners to high level racers. Sailing in the Trinity Quarter is available as a sport option for the Third Form and above.
Beginners will progress through the RYA Level 2 course under the guidance of Mr Symes. After the long exeat, they will participate in Club Racing on Saturdays.
Team racers learn the intricacies of the highly technical sport of team racing. This gives them a high chance of making it into their university teams in the future. They also gain experience in 420s, Fireflies, Laser 2000s, RS Varios etc whist at away matches.
We have a squad of about 14 sailors who form two teams. We regularly have matches against other schools, and attend events around the country. On the days we are not competing, we undertake focused training at Thrapston, or take part in the Club racing on Saturdays. We also attend the Itchenor Schools’ Week at the end of the Trinity Quarter, which is a fleet racing event.
The Michaelmas and Christmas Quarters are for team squad sailors only, and the option is open to Fourth Form and above, by invitation. Pupils will be chosen based on their performance during the previous Trinity Quarter, and will be expected to sail the following Trinity Quarter. We concentrate on team racing training, with matches against local schools at the weekends. We do not sail in the Easter Quarter.
