Saturday September 6th
Rugby
The first XV endured a tough afternoon against a strong Bedford side. Bedford had a player sent off early in the first half, but, they still overpowered a lackluster Oundle side who will be looking for an improved performance against St Edwards next Saturday.
The 2nds produced an impressive and gutsy perfromance. The game was 3 – 3 with only minutes to go when Bedford scored the winning try.
The 4ths started their season with a bang beating Bedford in a close encounter 29 – 24. The 5ths and 6ths also made successful starts to the season.
A depleted Colts A team, due to the national cricket final on Monday, almost
pulled off what would have been a remarkable victory with half of their team
missing. After a monumental effort they fell just short losing 17 –
19, tries coming from Buckworth (Sc, 5), Padmore (C, 5) and Wylie (Sc, 5).
Girls' Hockey
Last weekend marked the start of the Oundle Girls’ hockey campaign. With seventeen matches played at nine different venues the weekend was every bit as exciting as anticipated.
The Oundle first XI began the offensive, scoring within the first 90 second. This aggression was mirrored by the other Oundle teams and the U16Bs, U16C’s and U15B’s controlled the early play.
However, whilst the First team were able to maintain their dominance the U15 and U16 B teams came under severe pressure from Stowe and the Bedford High Second XI. Kate Baker-Munton earned player of the match for her efforts in the U15 goal which led to the team’s eventual win. Despite fighting bravely the U16 teams were unable to withstand the opposition and were forced to settle for draws.
Elsewhere, the U14A team coach Miss Goatley stated that the girls put in a promising performance ‘once they had worked out each others’ names’ and Stephie Smith shone as the Second XI Centre Midfield.
The weekend ended as it had begun with the First XI achieving a 6-0 win against Cannock Hockey club. The match was far from easy and Oundle worked hard to maintain their intensity throughout. Surprisingly, the match highlight came not from the hockey but from Alice Banks who performed an excellent piece of gymnastics when a trip caused her to tumble across the ground, throwing her stick and travelling approximately 10 meters before finally coming to a hault.
In all, a fantastic effort was made by all teams promising a highly successful
and enjoyable season.
Saturday June 14th
Cricket
Oundle School Cricket Club had a very successful weekend of fixtures against Felsted. The first team scored 232 – 5 declared with the mainstay of the innings being a first wicket partnership of 134 between Rory Osmond (G, 5) and Harry Ramsden (F, 4). Osmond fell for a hard fought 54 Ramsden, however, went on to make a fantastic 111. It was always going to be a tough score to chase but Felsted fell to the swing of Harry Millington (S, U6) who took 3 – 30 and spin of Sam Foster (St A, U6) who took 4 – 50, as they were bowled out for 140.
The U15 A team had a close win continuing their winning momentum going into a big Lord Taverners game on Thursday against Manchester Grammar School. Chasing 150, after Alex Cossor (G, 4) took 3 – 20, Oundle were in trouble until Chambers (S, 4) scored a mature 51 not out. The U15 B and C teams both had comprehensive wins.
The U14 As had another close game and came out victorious. Having elected to bat first they got off to a great start, but, kept losing wickets at the wrong time so struggled to get any real momentum. Top scorers were Spencer (St A, 3), Robson (G, 3) 25 and Olver (By, 2) with 31. Olver then bowled a fantastic opening spell taking 4 – 18 to put Felsted in real trouble. The off spin duo of Hodgkinson (St A, 3), who was unlucky not to get any wickets, and Bostock (B, 3) who took 3 – 27 put the opposition under real pressure and they ended up twelve runs short.
Tennis
This week only three teams played in matches. The U14As, U15As and U15Bs all played away against Stowe. Each team won convincingly with the U14As playing some excellent tennis to win 7-2 and the U15 teams both won 9-0.
Athletics
On Saturday Oundle School Athletics Club took some athletes to the County Trials where the standard is generally higher than most school fixtures with some national athletes trialling. Oundle’s athletes did really well with quite a few coming in the top three. Sophie Reynolds (Sn 3) 800m, Zoe Kier (N 5) high jump and Emily Kier (N 4) 1500m all will be representing the county next week. Emily beat the school record for the 1500m, which now stands at 4.53.1m. Some of the athletes are reserves for Saturday after coming third in their events, Alexander Ogilvie (F 3) 1500m, Jasper Mak (B 4) long jump, and Jess Varley (L 2) 1500m.
Saturday May 24th
Although a grey and blustery day, the rain held off on Saturday 24th May for the annual Inter House athletics.
In the junior competition there was some very close competition. Representing Berrystead 2nd form Sam Olver (By 2) won 1500m, javelin and high jump jumping 1.35m beating his opponent by 25cm. Also in the 2nd form Jess Varley (L 2) won the 1500m, 200m and her high jump, closely beating Bella Bryson (By 2) by only 2cm. Both the girls and boys competitions went down to the final event, the 4x100m relay. Laxton 1st and 2nd form girls both won their races to take Laxton to overall victory. Berrystead dominated the boys relays winning both to take the points needed to win the boys competition.
In the Senior boys’ competition School House had some very strong intermediate and senior athletes to recover from coming 8th in the junior section to win the overall boys competition. Tristan Lothian (Sc L6) helped the senior team rack up the points winning the 200m and javelin events and coming 3rd in the 400m. Laxton came 2nd wining the junior competition and 3rd in the seniors but could not keep up the excellent results in the intermediate events. Fisher came 3rd overall coming in the top 4 in each age group showing good consistency throughout all age groups in the house.
The girls’ competition was a very close one. The rivalry from last year’s event with Sanderson beating New House by only 1 point to take 1st place, New House were determined to make their mark. Both Houses were in the top 3 for each age group. In the intermediate section there were some excellent performances. Kitty St Johnston (W 4) and Iona Darroch (Sn 5) competed against each other in the 100m and 200m events, with Kitty taking 1st place in the 200m and 2nd in the 100m, and Iona taking 1st in the 100m and 2nd in the 100m, both beating their competition easily. Some strong performances from the Kier sisters helped New House take 1st in the intermediate section. Wyatt also racked up a few 1st places to add to their points. In the end it remained very close, Wyatt came 3rd, New House came 2nd again losing out to Sanderson by only 3 points.
Many thanks must go out to all the parents and supporters, and the athletes
for taking place, all the staff who helped run the event, and especially Miss
R. Goatly for running the event.
Saturday May 17th
Tennis
The Girls’ tennis teams travelled to Gresham’s School on Saturday. The 1st VI won 6-3. The 2nd VI and 3rd VI also won their matches 5-4 and 9-0 respectively. Due to the senior teams being very strong this year, the decision was made to bring some younger girls up to gain valuable experience for future seasons. Harriet Bates (Sn 4) played in the 1st pair of the 1st VI, Felicity Wilbraham (N 4), Chloe Smith (N 4), Rosie Clark (K 4) and Megan Waind (N 3) all played in the senior 3rd VI. None of the girls were intimidated by playing against older opposition and really held their ground. All the junior teams won their matches as well.
The Boys' team were up against tough opposition at Rugby School. The senior team have been struggling with injury so did not have their strongest team out. Unfortunately the 1st VI lost 0.5-8.5, the 2nd and 3rd VI also lost but had some closer games losing 4-5 and 3-6 respectively. It was disappointing for the juniors that their home matches had to be cancelled due to the rain, as a close match had been expected.
Cricket
After all home matches were called off Oundle U14s and U15s travelled to Stowe wary of much rain that was around.
The U14 A side were out to continue a good run of recent results and pick up their third win in a row. Having won the toss Oundle elected to field first and they started very well with Robson (G, 3) and Spencer (St A, 3) picking up early wickets. Wickets kept coming with Bostock (B, 3) producing a fine piece of fielding to inflict a run out. At 70 - 7 the rain came and play was suspended for forty five minutes. Oundle finished the innings off fairly quickly after the break bowling Stowe out for 107. Olver (By, 2) taking 2 - 33, Robson (G, 3) 2 - 20, Spencer (St A, 3) 2 -15 and Bostock (B, 3) 2 - 12. Oundle knocked off the total fairly comfortably with Spencer scoring 31, Farquar (B, 3) 21 and Olver taking the side home with 36 not out.
The U14 B team also had a good win. Having bowled Stowe out for 64, Napier (F, 3) being pick of the bowlers with 5 - 13. They made light work of chasing the total down losing only three wickets in the process.
The U15 A team endured a frustrating afternoon. Playing a timed game Stowe decided to bat for forty two overs, scoring 120. This left Oundle only fourteen overs to bat. Initially they had a go at batting aggressively to chase down the unlikely target but having lost early wickets they had to consolidate. They ended 60 - 3 in a drawn match.
Saturday May 3rd
Cricket
Oundle endured a tough Saturday afternoon against a strong set of Shrewsbury sides. The 1st XI were comprehensively beaten. The 2nds had a great game. Having scored 183 for 6 they looked on course for a win, however, Shrewsbury managed to scrape home for a one wicket victory. The 3rd XI continued their unbeaten start to the season. Oundle bowled first after winning the toss and bowled Shrewsbury out for only 58, Freddie Ewer (B, U6) was the hero picking up a hat trick and Rupert Rudkin (St A, L6) taking two fine catches. The batsman chased the total down without much trouble to obtain a convincing nine wicket win.
The U16s had a close game. Having scored 168 for 7, Shrewsbury crept home in the last over.
The U15 A team continued their form from the Lord Taverner's Cup on Tuesday against Bedford with a strong performance against Shrewsbury. Oundle bowled the opposition out for only 87 and made light work of chasing the total down, not losing a wicket. Chambers (Sc, 4) ending 41 not out. The B team won a close and exciting game on wicket that was not easy to score runs. Oliver Middleditch (F, 4) was the main stay of the batting scoring 46 out of a total of 108. Shrewsbury were then bowled out for 94, Charles Ashworth (G, 4) picking up three wickets.
The U14 As lost to a very strong Shrewsbury side. They did well to restrict Shrewsbury to 156 all out, Robson (G, 3) taking 3 - 27, Olver (By, 2) and Hodgkinson (St A, 3) both picking up two wickets. In reply Oundle struggled to 90 - 9, Henry Spencer (St A, 3) batting well for 30. The B team had their first taste of defeat. Having restricted Shrewsbury to 123 for 9 Oundle got off to a strong start reaching 50 for 1. A collapse then took place and Oundle were all out for 98, Barney Dillarstone (L, 3) scoring 48. The C team came off second best in a low scoring affair.
Athletics
This week Oundle travelled to Bromsgrove with some depleted teams due to injuries. The junior team had some excellent performances in the middle distance events. Ellen Bowley (K 3) and Georgia Sherlock (Sn 3) both came 2nd in the 800m and 1500m respectively. From the boys Hugo Laffey (L 3) came 2nd in the 800m and Alexander Ogilvie (F 3) came 1st in the 1500m with a lead of about 150m. The sprinters also ran well racking up 76 points between them. A 2nd and a 4th in the long jump from Frederick Scriven (StA 3) and Tania Wimpenny (L 3) respectively also helped gain points. Overall both the junior girls and boys both came 3rd .The intermediate teams did not have their strongest athletes out but they all worked really hard. Some excellent running from Iona Darroch (Sn 5) in the 100m, 200m and 100m hurdles saw her gain 1st in all 3 races. Zoe Kier (N 5) came 1st in the high jump winning by 15cm, she also narrowly missed out on the 1st position in the 300m by 0.1seconds. The girls came 2nd in the 4x100m relay. Sebsatien Goodall (L 5) ran really well in the 400m and 1500m coming 1st in both races. In the long jump Rory O’kelly-Lynch (S 5) jumped 5.42m to come 1st. Despite missing two of their sprinters the boys came 3rd in the 4x100m race. Overall both the girls and boys came 3rd.
Unfortunately the senior girls only had 3 athletes in their team. Flora Cadzow (Sn L6) competed in three events coming 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the high jump, long jump and 1500m respectively. The boys had some very tough opposition in all the events. Tristan Lothian (Sc L6) came 3rd in the 200m event. George Hallewell (G L6) gained 3rd in the long jump, and then ran in the 1500m despite not being a middle distance runner so that he could gain points for the team. Some excellent jumping again from Sebastian Wilson-Dyer-Gough (F U6) in the long jump, winning by nearly a whole metre and coming a close 2nd in the triple jump.
Girls Tennis
The Tennis Club played their block fixture against Bromsgrove. The 1st VI first pair of Sophie Walker (L 5) and Alice Wilson (N 5) played in a thrilling game against Bromsgrove’s first pair, coming back from being 4-1 down to win 6-4. The second and third pair lost to the Bromsgrove first pair. Oundle 1st VI then won all the remaining six games, winning 36 sets but only dropping two to win seven games to two. Oundles 2nd VI beat their Bromsgrove counterparts nine game to nil with Sophie Wilson (N U6) and Laura Diggins (K L6) winning every game 6-0. There were also comprehensive 9-0 victories for the U14 and U15 A sides against Bromsgrove.
The U16s were at home to Stamford both A and B sides recorded 9-0 victories
although the 3rd U16A pairing went to 7-5 against Stamford’s 1st pair
after being 1-4 down. The Oundle pairing of Zoe Rice and Angharad Marment
performed very well and lost only one set all day.
Golf Report
The finals of the Independent Schools Golf association were contested at The Devere Wokefield Park Golf club in Reading on April 27th and 28th.
The 6996 yard par 72 layout proved to be a challenge which saw some high scores over the course of the tournament. The Oundle team consisted of Angus Lang (F L6), Henry Fray (G U6) and Sam Woodfield (Lx L6). Henry Fray performed best of the Oundle players with respectable rounds of 83 and 84.
It was not meant to be as Oundle finished 13th out of the 16 schools competing. However, the competition was fierce, with Millfield winning with a score of 296 (the combined best two scores from the team over the two days) followed by Loretto on 304 and Wellington College on 305. All three schools offer golfing scholarships.
Still, it was a memorable experience which Oundle will hopefully be a part of next year when the competition will be held at St. Andrews Bay in 2009.

Crusader Cup Final, Wednesday 23rd April 2008
Oundle 1st XI football reached the final of the Crusader Cup for the first
time having won all three group matches as well as the quarter final and a
closely fought semi final against Bromsgrove. The match was due to take place
at the end of last term, however, due to poor weather it was postponed until
Wednesday 23rd April. The team travelled to Milton Road, home of Cambridge
City Football Club, along with a noisy set of staff, parents and pupils for
a replay of the first game of the tournament against Kings Ely.
The game got off to a nervy start with both sides cancelling each other out.
Oundle settled more quickly and started to play some good football. The first
chance of the game came after twenty minutes when Captain Abel Smith (St A,
U6) forced Ely's goalkeeper into a good stop. Oundle then switched off as
Ely counter attacked, thankfully Porter (C, U6) produced a smart save. The
crucial strike came after thirty minutes when a speculative effort from thirty
yards found the back of net and Oundle found themselves behind. Having dominated
possession Oundle were losing at the break.
Oundle came out for the second half with a real determination to get back
into the game, roared on by the crowd who were producing good noise despite
being severly outnumbered by Ely supporters. As the clocked ticked by Oundle
increased the pressure and had many corners but could not break down the organised
Ely defence. Chances were coming: Taylor (B, L6) had a good strike which went
just wide of the post, while there were several goal mouth scrambles as Oundle
pushed more and more men forward. The big chance came with just five minutes
to go. Smith beat his man on the right wing and produced a good cross which
struck the arm of an Ely defender. The offence was spotted by the linesman
who immediately signalled a penalty. With normal penalty taker Elliot Power
(L, L6) off injured Todd Whitby (L, 5) stood up to take the kick. A well struck
penalty was inches away from being perfect, however, it slammed into the bar
and rebounded back to Whitby who had a second effort superbly saved by the
goalkeeper. It was not going to be Oundle's night, and this was proved when
from the resulting corner Sam Rose's (St A, U6) header beat the keeper only
to be cleared off the line by the defender.
It was a frustrating end to what has been a very successful season. The team
took the defeat with good grace that they have played with throughout the
campaign and they can be proud of their effort to get to the final. It leaves
next years crop a challenge to get one step further and win the cup. Many
thanks to the team for all their efforts this season.
Saturday 15th March
Netball
This season has been a very successful season for the netball squads, many of which were undefeated. 88% of Oundle’s matches were either a win or a draw. Special mention must go to Mrs H. Amps and her U14C team who came top out of all the teams winning seven out of seven games.
From all the coaches and players, a big thank you to all of those that came
to support or have helped out with the netball club.
Hockey
The 1st XI finished their season in fine form with two wins, firstly against Stamford last Tuesday 3-1 and then at home to St Albans 4-1 with goals from Charlie Rose, Harry Millington and Henry Spurrier.
Saturday 8th March
Netball
This week Oundle faced one of our traditional rivals Uppingham. The 1st VII did not have their strongest team out due to injuries, which obviously impacted the team, and although Oundle did not give up throughout the game, their efforts did not pay off, Oundle losing 23-26
Out of 13 games Oundle won 11, drew one and lost one. There were some very big wins with the 3rd VII winning 39-5 and the U16A team winning 35-6. However in the U15 age group there were some very close matches against Uppingham who proved tough opposition. The A team won by only one goal, the B team drew and the C team won by four goals.
Hockey
This week saw the Hockey club play against Trent College. The 1st XI lost 4-1 but the match saw 4th Former Alex Cosser (G) make his debut in goal and collect the MVP award.
The U15 sides fared better than the senior sides, remaining undefeated, with the C team conceding their first goal of the season, but scoring seven of their own.
Rugby
On Saturday Oundle School Rugby Club took four U14 teams to Stowe and had an excellent day, with three Oundle teams keeping their opponents score at zero.
The U14A XV won 38-0 with a flurry of tries coming after half time, scoring
five tries in seven minutes. The U14Bs had a tighter game but won through
28-12. The C and D XVs scored over 50 points and showed their defensive pedigree,
not conceding a point between them.
Football
Oundle School Football Club suffered a weekend of frustration. The 1st XI
lost to a strong Bedford Modern side. However, the 2nds had a great win by
the margin of 4 - 0, Seb Wilson Dyer Gough (F U6) scoring twice in an all
round good performance.
The junior sides also struggled after a long season. Special mention must
again go to the U15 B side who got a very creditable draw to end a highly
successful season.
The final games of the season are this weekend against Loughborough Grammar
School and the 1st XI then play the Crusader Cup final against Kings Ely on
Monday at Cambridge City's ground.
Saturday 1st March
Netball
Oundle 1st VII netball team travelled to Felsted this week. The team continued their excellent play of recent weeks. Oundle dominated throughout the game to take the victory 43-25.
Oundle had some big wins, with the 2nd VII winning 43-12 and the U14E team winning 29-8. Out of the 12 fixtures against Felsted Oundle won 11 and lost only one. With only a few fixtures left let’s hope that Oundle can keep up this high level in netball.
Rugby
On Saturday Oundle hosted the UNO rugby cup, which comprises of Uppingham, RGS Newcastle and Oundle, hence the derivation of the name.
Oundle kicked the triangular tournament off playing against Uppingham and dominated encounters, winning 24-0. Uppingham then played RGS Newcastle and lost 22-0, setting up the final match between Oundle and RGS Newcastle as the tournament decider.
The final match was a tough encounter which saw many big tackles going in which Oundle won through to become tournament champions.
Football
Saturday was a day of mixed fortunes for Oundle School Football Club.
The 1st XI had a remarkable victory against Haileybury. They trailed 2 – 0 at half time due to two defensive lapses, however, they showed remarkable character to recover and win 3 – 2. Smith (St A, U6) pulled one back when he got on the end of a long throw. Rose (St A, U6) equalised and Power (L, L6) converted a penalty to complete the turnaround. The 3rds also had a good win (3 – 1) against a very strong side.
Saturday 23rd February
Netball
Oundle School yet again showed their dominance in netball. Oundle had 21 wins and only 1 draw.
The 1st VII were at home in a tournament with Rugby, Sedbergh and Cheltenham. The team really stepped up their game against their tough opposition. Against Sedbergh Oundle won 12-6, against Cheltenham Oundle won 13-10. The team had a very close game against Rugby, with it being goal for goal throughout, but Oundle came through victorious 17-16. Winning all their games meant that they won the tournament. 1st team coach Mrs Burnham said its one of the best she has seen them play. The whole team played outstandingly; however Jess Hume (N U6) was picked for player of the tournament along side Fi Hilton-Jones (N U6) for her hard work and never giving up in the games.
The U16A, U15A and U14A teams also played in the tournament. The U16 VII beat Sedbergh 22-14 and went on to win the group. The U15A and U14 teams also won their groups.
Hockey
Oundle School Hockey Club played their block fixture against Worksop College
and although the 1st XI went down 6-0 at home to their Worksop counterparts
the other teams performed well with wins for the 2nds, 4ths and most U15 sides.
Next week's opponents are Trent College and the 1st XI will be looking to
get their season back on track.
Rugby
On Saturday Oundle School Rugby Club travelled to Bishop Vesey’s School with the U14 A and B XVs. The A XV won their encounter 14-0 with tries from Jon Allen (StA 3) and man of the match Freddie Scriven (StA 3).
Credit should be given to Oundle's defence as Bishop Vesey struggled to penetrate. The B XV had a more comfortable victory, winning 59-3.
Football
Saturday was another successful day for the Football Club in a block fixture against the Bromsgrove.
The 1sts, 2nds and 3rds travelled away but returned with two victories out of three. The 1st XI started very poorly and were 2 – 0 down at half time. However, the come back was completed and it looked as though they had a chance to push for victory after an own goal and some great work from Rose (St A U6) set up Whitby (L5) for the equaliser. Oundle then went to sleep and conceded pretty much straight from kick off to lose 3 – 2. The 2nd XI won 4 – 3, having been 3 – 0 up, and the 3rd team also won.
At home the pick of the results were achieved by the U15s. The A team won 8 – 0 thanks to two goals from Hawk (St A 4) and Gilmartin (Sc 4). The B team managed to better that result winning 13 – 0. Timothy Lo (Ldr 4) scored his second hat-trick of the season while Robin Ligertwood (F 4) and Edmund Jewell (Ldr 4) who both scored twice.
Netball
This week Oundle 1st VII were away against Oakham. Oundle was not on top form and lost the game 24-33. The girls are looking forward to a break and will come back strong, ready for their next games.
The U14A and U15A teams played in a triangular tournament at home against Church High from Newcastle, and Oakham. Both Oundle teams showed a strong performance to beat the opposing teams and won the tournament. Yet again Oundle dominated the fixtures against tough Oakham sides, winning 11 out of the 17, drawing two and losing four.
Hockey
This Saturday Oundle School Hockey Club played their block fixture against Kimbolton and remained undefeated in the five games played.
Oundle 1st XI started well with some good pressure, but unfortunately could not convert the early attacks into goals, Kimbolton leading right up until half time. Sustained pressure then resulted in three goals being scored by Oundle, including two from Tom Ransom (Sc), one of which was an excellent reverse stick shot from a tight angle that flew past the goal keepers ear into the top corner of the net. Kimbolton came back with a fine individual goal for the game to finish 3-2 to Oundle.
There were also victories for the 2nd XI, 3rd XI and 15As with a draw for the 15Bs rounding off an unbeaten day.
Rugby
On Saturday Oundle made the short journey to Uppingham for our second encounter
of the season, with three out of the five teams winning.
The U14A XV playing with the wind at their backs scored first against their
Uppingham opponents through winger Chris Berry (L). Oundle forwards then began
to dominate encounters which led to two more scores, one of which was converted,
making the score 17-0 at half time. The second half saw Uppingham make use
of the wind, kicking the ball into the Oundle 22 and applying pressure on
the Oundle defence, which worked well, turning ball over. Unfortunately the
clearing kick was charged down and Uppingham scored, 17-7. This kick started
Oundle back into action, scoring three tries through the centres following
some well worked backs moves to leave the final score at 39-7.
The U14D XV played in a very good match, coming back from a try down to score three of their own, winning 15-7, with the man of the match award going to Chris Waring (Ldr). In the U14E game the two teams were very well matched for the first ten minutes until Oundle scored. This try opened the floodgates with nine tries being scored in total, although only one conversion meant the final score was 47-0. Man of the match went to Ali Hunt (C).
Football
The Football Club encountered tough opposition this weekend with a block fixture against Rugby. All four senior sides travelled to Rugby and all returned without success. The 1st XI, looking to build on their two wins in midweek, endured an afternoon of frustration, creating enough chances in the first half to have won the game, but were punished with ten minutes from the end when a Rugby counter attack resulted in a good save by Jonathan Porter (C), only for the ball to rebound and unluckily go in off.
The second XI played some very attractive football but did not have the penetration to pierce the Rugby defence. The 3rd and 4th XI were both narrowly defeated.
The junior sides had a much more successful day hosting Rugby. The U16A had a 4 – 2 victory, securing their first win of the season. The U16B were also successful. The U15A lost out in a close and physical encounter. However, the U15B team continued their fantastic start to the season. They completed a 6 – 1 win, with Robin Ligertwood (F) and Timothy Lo (Ldr) both scoring twice.
Saturday 25th January
Netball
The 1st VII have had an extremely busy week, performing at a very high level at the Regional Finals, playing a tough St. Edwards on Thursday, and then having to try to keep performance levels up to face Repton away this Saturday.
Unfortunately Oundle could not continue with the high level of play they have shown in previous weeks, and lost the game 19-37. The U16A VII had the same fixture list as the 1st VII, in the last quarter of their game their heavy match schedule caught up with them, and they only just missed out losing 34-37.
The 2nd and 3rd VII played very well against Repton, with the 2nd VII winning 26-11, and the 3rd VII winning by an amazing 41-4. In all of the netball games played against Repton, Oundle won 9 and lost only 2.
Hockey
On Saturday the boys Hockey teams played against Oakham School. Although there was a mixture of results there was some good news for the 1st XI who continued to show improvement, drawing with their counterparts. The 1st XI could perhaps have done better than a draw as we looked very dangerous at times; stringing passes together which tore the Oakham defence apart.
Oundle scored first through Charlie Rose from close quarters. Unfortunately after an injury Oundle had to reorganise, and passes started to go to opposition players, gifting them chances at goal. Oakham scored twice following the restructure and kept the lead until Tom Ransom let go of an outrageous shot from the top of the D. Credit must be given to goalkeeper Frank Sanders who pulled off many fantastic saves to keep them in the game.
Rugby
On Saturday Oundle hosted Ampleforth, who brought four teams to play against the U14s. Oundle outperformed their counterparts in every game and collectively amassed nearly 200 points.
The U14 A XV led the way winning 51-0. The score reflected the dominance Oundle had over Ampleforth in almost every area of the game. The hard work which had been put in during training sessions was very much evident in the home sides’ defence which was well organised and uncompromising.
Football
After a successful start to the football season last week Oundle found themselves up against much stiffer opposition in Radley. The 1st XI started poorly and were put under much pressure during the first fifteen minutes until, against the run of play, Clements converted at the back post after a nice passing move. This seemed to kick Oundle into life and they started to play with much more energy. Some sloppy defending let Radley back into the game and a penalty put them 2 – 1 up.
Oundle created a whole host of chances which they failed to convert until the last few minutes when Smith produced a delightful cross which was pounced on for what was a deserved draw. The 2nds and 3rds both lost but the 4th XI produced a magnificent display to earn a 4 – 2 victory.
The performance of day came from the U15Bs who returned from Radley with a 9 – 0 win. Incredibly there were two hat tricks one scored by Tim Lo and the other by Charlie Ashworth.

Netball
This week we wanted to continue with our excellent standard of play shown last week. Our 1st and U16 VII played at the Regional Tournament in Nottingham. The 1st VII had some tough opposition but worked hard throughout the games to come 6th. An excellent display of leadership meant that Rachael Hawkesford (W) achieved player of the tournament.
The U16 VII played very well, working as a team with Charlotte Taylor shooting well under pressure. The team came 3rd, just missing out on a place in the Nationals (see separate report below).
In our block fixture against St. Edwards, out of the 10 games, we won eight, drew one and lost one. Oundle once again showed their dominance in the sport.
The U16A netball team played in the regional final in Nottingham on Saturday. The team played and won four games in their pool, to progress through to the semi-finals. There they came up against the Nottingham Girls' High School team who rapidly went into a 5-0 lead. A gritty fight back by the Oundle U16s brought the score back to 8-8, but Nottingham then pulled away in the last few minutes to win 12-8. Sadly it means that the team does not go through to the National finals.
The team recovered well to win the 3rd place play off against Priory Lincoln, in a close game, the score finishing at 9-8. Particular thanks to our coaches: Miss Goatly and Mrs. Burnham for their outstanding contribution.
The team consisted of: Charlotte Taylor (L), Zoë Rice (D), Fran Denny (D), Annabel Cooke (K), Alice Wilson (N), Iona Darroch (S), Sophie Walker (L) and Miranda Spencer (L).
Hockey
On Saturday, Oundle 1st XI travelled to Rugby School, showing a vast improvement on last weeks performance, playing in a very tight affair. Although losing 4-3 the team linked well in attack, causing many problems for the Rugby defence, with Henry Spurrier scoring all three goals.
Football
The Football Club completed a full set of fixtures last weekend winning all five games against King’s Ely. The First XI endured a frustrating afternoon; dominating but still seeing the first half come to an end without a goal being scored. The second half was more of a scrappy affair but Oundle got the vital goal. Dominic Price’s (Ldr) shot was saved, but the rebound hit a defender and went in. Oundle held on to secure a vital win in their first Crusader Cup game.
The 2nd XI had a comfortable victory and the 3rds won 5 – 0; James Martin scoring twice. The 4th form played away at Ely with the As winning 3 – 0 and the Bs winning 2 – 0.
Saturday 12th January
Netball
The first week back saw all the Netball teams face Trent College, Nottingham. The 1st VII were at home facing a tough Trent side. It was a close game throughout the first three quarters but Oundle's fitness and skill levels proved to be too high for the opposition. In the last quarter Oundle took the lead to win 28-19. Player of the match was Jess Martin for her consistent play and fighting spirit throughout the game. The team worked well together after only two sessions, and showed great potential for a successful season.
Out of ten fixtures against Trent all ten were won, a very successful start to the season. Special mention must go out to the U14As who played extremely well to win their game 62-9.
Hockey
The boys' hockey season started with a block fixture against the Perse School, and considering the short amount of preparation time Oundle did well winning thre,e and drawing one, from six fixtures.
The 1st XI had a hard challenge, facing a team packed with County (and two England) players. Credit must be given to the boys who played some quality hockey against a very good outfit, who unfortunately were just more clinical in the final third. Although losing 5-1 the goal scored was a fantastic bit of team play that was finally put away by Henry Spurrier. Next week sees another tough fixture against Rugby School.
Rugby
Saturday saw the start of the U14 Rugby season with the first of three fixtures against rivals Uppingham. With both Schools having very little time to prepare for this fixture it was always going to a very raw affair. Oundle faired very well over the five fixtures, winning four and losing one.
The U14 A XV started their season doing the basics very well, which resulted in many chances being created. Although a number of chances were not taken during the first half; winger Chris Berry had a very good game and managed to bag himself a number of tries. Captain Jon Allen also put in a very good performance, leading from the front by example. The final score was 46 – 0, a fine start to the season.
Football
The first game of the Football season was played between Oundle 1st XI and the world famous Corinthian Casuals. The first twenty minutes consisted of almost constant Oundle pressure, before the Casuals stamped their authority on the game scoring three in ten minutes.
Power struck back before the break with a great effort from outside the box; however the men were 4-1 up at the break. Oundle were more solid defensively in the second half and again produced some good football. Smith scored twice, as did the Casuals with the final score 6-3 in favour of the men. This was however, a good workout ahead of two big Cup games this week against Spalding and Ely.

Saturday 1st December
Hockey
This week the girls had a tough fight, not only against the opposition but against tough elements. Unfortunately Oundle’s unbeaten season came to an end, losing to St. Edwards 2-1.
Oundle played very well but some outstanding play by St Edwards allowed them to take the victory. The first half saw some exceptional play by Oundle and an excellent goal by Alice Wilson, which meant at the break Oundle led 1-0. However, the opposition came back very strongly in the second half and after a slight lapse in our standard of play the score was soon 2-1 to them. Oundle finished in a superior manner working exceptionally hard and battling right up to the final whistle, showing their high fitness levels creating chances in the last 10 minutes.
The boys played against Stowe, again showing our dominance with all 5 teams winning their games comfortably.
Rugby
Saturday 1st December saw Oundle School Rugby Club fielded 14 teams against Ampleforth, and with the senior teams playing at home it meant the longest journey of the season for all Junior teams. Of the 14 fixtures Oundle played lost only one match, and were undefeated at home.
The 1st XV, drawing to the end of a very successful season, put on a fine display on to secure their ninth win. The Oundle forwards dominated throughout, and powerful running from the back line produced an early converted try. Despite continuous pressure, only one more try was scored in the first half, leaving the score at 12-0. The second half saw much of the same, with Oundle attacking for much of the time. Some intelligent rugby and strong forward work led to the Captain, Tom Ransom, scoring twice. The final minutes saw a characteristic Ampleforth fight back, but resilient defence ensured the final score stayed at 22-0 to Oundle.
The 1st XVs win was followed by wins from the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th XVs. Following their long journey the Colts recorded their first win of the season with a well deserved and hard fought victory. Leading 15 - 0 at half time the team battled into the wind in the second half scoring a fourth try courtesy of an Andrew Farenheim charge down. The final score was 20 – 5. The Junior Colts continued their dominance with four wins from their four games.
Fixtures against Ampleforth: Won 12; Drew 1: Lost 1

Rowing
On Saturday, the club raced five crews against Oundle Town Boat Club on their stretch of water. We competed against local club children and pupils from Prince William School. Although there was little direct 'like for like' competition the club performed well, and it was an excellent opportunity for us to creat close links with this club and we shall return the invitation next term.
On Sunday 25th at the Star Club Small Boats Head, Bedford., Oundle produced
a win in the Novice Women’s category for our girls coxed four. The crew
were
Suzanna Monk (D), Claire Parsons (Sn), Charlotte Arnold (N), Philippa Burnham
(D) and Hannah Hoskins (L).
Sam Green (L), although racing in the Junior Boys category was the fastest Men's Novice on the day, so gained a moral victory, if not a technical one. Four (3rd form) J14 coxed quads performed very well indeed, competing for the first time with some close racing against Bedford Modern School.
Hockey
After a week of exciting build up, it was finally here, our fixtures against Uppingham. Thirteen Oundle teams were in action.
The 1st XI won 3-0. Oundle were strong from the start with some excellent dynamic play soon creating a lead of 2-0 with goals from both Henrietta Cranfield and Rachel Hawkesford. Oundle dominated for the rest of the 1st half. After half time Uppingham came out strongly. However, Oundle defended well and Jessica Hume soon managed to score after an outstanding run by Lucy Taylor right from the half way line. It was an excellent performance by Oundle and they kept their standard of play high throughout.
The U15a XI played in an extremely high quality game with both sides having opportunities to score, but both defence stayed strong and the result stayed at 0-0.
The boys were successful with the U14a, b and c teams scoring 17 between them between them and letting in only two, against Mill Hill.
In total thirteen matches were played against Uppingham, resulting in ten victories, two draws and one loss a fantastic achievement.
Rugby
The biggest game of the season saw every member of the 1st XV rise to the challenge with an explosive start, scoring three unconverted tries in the first 15 minutes. A drop in intensity led to a breakaway Uppingham try, leaving the score at 15-7 at the break. In the second half there was good rugby played by both teams, but a more determined Uppingham defence meant that, despite Oundle's possession and territory, no more points were scored by either team. The 1st XV deserve credit for extending the unbeaten record against Uppinhgham by another year.
The Junior Section of the club took the short journey to Uppingham and gained some good results with Colts Bs winning and the whole Junior Colts section winning, conceding only ten points. The Junior Colts A XV played in a tight affair, winning only 10 - 5, whereas the JC B, C and D XVs played some fantastic running rugby in cold conditions, and won 38-5, 39-0 and 38 - 0 respectively.
U18 Girls' Hockey: Midlands Round
Alice Banks writes:
Last Thursday [November15th], the U18 Cup team travelled to Rugby School to participate in the Midland's Round of the U18 Cup.
It was a tiring day consisting of 20 minute one way matches but Oundle performed well throughout. Our first match was against Repton, an excellent team with some high level players, which we lost 2-0 after a slight drop in our standard of play. Our second match was against Denstone College, during which we picked up our performance and came away with a 2-0 victory. Next we played King Edward's High School winning 1-0. Our final pool match was against Dame Alice Harpur; we played well winning 1-0.
This meant that were runners-up of our pool, behind Repton, so we qualified for the semi-final against Bablake. They had a couple of key players, however, we dominated throughout the match but unfortunately did not score. This meant it went to penalty strokes. Firstly, each team took 5 strokes which we drew 2-2, with Katie Blagden in goal doing some fantastic saves. It then went to sudden death, which we were drawing after some excellent strokes from Henrietta Cranfield and Thommy Purbrook. However, after a stroke from Jessica Hume was disallowed, Bablake were awarded the victory.
At the end of the day, Repton were the overall winners of the tournament beating Bablake in the final.
Saturday 10th November
Rugby
Saturday 10th November saw Oundle School Rugby Club playing their annual school fixture against the birthplace of the great game: Rugby School.
The senior sides playing at home were unbeaten with four wins and one draw between them. This was lead by the 1st XV who recorded their seventh straight victory of the season. After a closely fought first half Oundle School 1st XV pulled away with another strong performance from the pack to win 24–11.
The junior sides travelling away to the home of rugby football produced six wins from their seven games with the Junior Colts teams scoring 235 points to Rugby’s five over the four games.
Hockey
This week the 1st XI travelled to Bromsgrove where they knew they were in
for a tough game. However the girls were not intimidated by this and went
out strong from the start. In the first half Oundle were soon 1-0 up after
an excellent goal from Jessica Hume who took advantage of an error in their
defence. In the second half they managed to increase their lead to 2-0 after
another goal from Jessica, created from some fantastic attacking by Lucy Taylor.
Bromsgrove were later awarded a penalty stroke off which they scored. However,
Oundle maintained their lead for the remainder of the game.
The performance, although they won, was not as good as it has been in previous
games.
The other teams did very well, winning five and losing one against Bromsgrove. The 2nd XI played DAH winning 2-0. In total the girls won nine games, and lost only three.
Squash
On Tuesday 6th November Oundle played Uppingham and Rugby. Both 1st and 2nd
boys’ teams beat their Uppingham counterparts 5-0. The girls’
team won 7-1 against Rugby's 1st VIII players, with most of our players winning
every game. As four of our players were 5th Formers, for most of whom this
was their first match, this is a very good result.

Rugby
After narrowly defeating Radley 7-5 in September Oundle 1st XV knew they were in for a hard battle. The opening minutes saw Oundle under intense pressure and after a 5 metre attacking scrum Radley scored an unconverted try. This seemed to spark Oundle into action, mounting several attacks on the Radley line, resulting in us crossing the line without reward until Abel Smith intercepted a stray Radley pass to run in unopposed under the posts, which was converted by Sam Rose, giving Oundle a 7-5 lead going into half time.
The second half saw Radley score an early penalty to lead 8-7 for a sustained period of time before Henry Spurrier received the ball from an attacking move and beat four Radley defenders before offloading to Jonny Porter for a try, again converted by Rose. Radley then mounted several attacks and the resolve of the Oundle team to defend was magnificent. In desperation Radley began to concede penalties giving the territorial advantage to Oundle, resulting in a last minute try by Fergus Austin to secure a memorable win 19-8.
The 2nd XV had a fantastic turn around of the 40-5 defeat away at Radley earlier this year. The Oundle forwards produced an outstanding display and were dominant in scrum, lineout and the loose which resulted in Radley being pinned back in their own half for much of the game, and finished up deserving 12-5 winners. The Junior Colt A XV played in a very tight affair and showed their collective mettle to come back from an unconverted Radley try to win 7-5 with a try from Oli Petrides, converted by Andrew Turner.
Hockey
The 1st XI travelled to Rugby school, where they faced strong opposition. It was a close match throughout, however their standard did not quite reach the high level of performance they were showing at the end of the last Quarter. Rugby managed to score first off a quick break despite Oundle dominating the possession. Nevertheless, it was not long before Oundle equalised off a short corner strike by Alice Banks. Oundle picked up their game for the rest of the first half and continued to dominate. After half time they came back strongly and within minutes had scored off a short corner. They continued this lead for the majority of the second half but the girls handled the pressure well and eventually Jess Hume managed to score off a strike by Henrietta Cranfield. Katie Blagden was very reliable in goal making a fantastic debut for the 1st XI. The final score to the exciting game was 2-2, so continuing the 1st XIs unbeaten season.
All the other teams performed well with the girls winning eleven, drawing two, and losing only three, and the boys wining three and losing one. A special mention goes to the U14A boys, who beat the highly talented Perse Boys School, winning 4-0.
Netball Thursday 11 October
Yesterday the 1st Netball squad played in the U18 County Netball tournament, playing Caroline Chisholm School in the first match winning comfortably 8 - 3. A defeat by Bishop Stopford (4 - 12) was followed by a close game against Wellingborough, which we won in the closing seconds 7 - 6 after coming back from two goals down.Victories against Campion (8 - 3), and Wollaston (8 - 1) followed, and finally a decisive 14 - 1 Northampton High School. The shooters were particularly impressive in this match. Overall on the day we came second to Bishop Stopford, which wins Oundle a place in the next round as Runners-up.

Senior members of the club competed at St. Neots Small Boats Head last weekend. An early race in the season for them to blow away the cobwebs, with ideal conditions to test themselves against some local competition.
Sam Green (L) raced the 2600m course twice in 11.08 mins and then 11.25 mins. A WJ18 coxed quad of Charlotte Arnold (N), Hannah Hoskins (L), Claire Parsons (Sn), Philippa Burnham (D) and Sophie Shacklock (L) completed the course in 12.20mins. Hannah Hoskins raced again in a single in 12.31mins and Nicky Millins, one of our gap year students, also raced a single in 13.25mins.
The 3rd Form boys had their first training day at the Peterborough Rowing Lake last Tuesday. The weather unfortunately was not kind to us, raining for most of the day, but it was very productive for them to train at a different venue for the first time. They were then treated to a Concept II ergo competition the following Thursday, where the rowing machines were electronically connected together, and the race projected onto a giant screen for all to see. Thanks to Simon Dowdy, an ARA Coaching and Development Officer & Team Leader, for his IT support.

Oundle Rugby Club Report 6th October
On Saturday 6th October the school played Harrow School. Harrow played host to the senior teams, and Oundle the juniors. The highlight of the day was the 1st XVs victory, which took their unbeaten streak to three matches, after Stowe and Radley in the previous weeks.
As the 1st XV locked horns with their counterparts from Harrow it was clear that Oundle had the much stronger and better drilled forward pack and dominated forward exchanges. The forwards used their catch and drive lineout move with power and precision, and which resulted in Oundle School’s open side flanker, Josh Taylor, picking up a brace of tries for himself, and was denied his third, with the try being disallowed by the referee. The backs seemed to lack fluency throughout the game although fly half Sam Rose went over the whitewash in the second half to score the winning try. Unfortunately Rose was not as successful with the boot, with a number of goal attempts hitting the uprights. Oundle ended the game having scored four tries to Harrow’s two, winning 20 – 17.
The Junior Colts As went into their game with renewed drive and vigour following their midweek Daily Mail Cup match. The game was a very evenly matched affair but Oundle showed a greater determination and following some powerful forward play won the game with an outstanding pre-prepared back move, resulting in Kieran Wylie crossing the line for a try, making the final score 10 – 5 to Oundle.

Oundle Hockey Club Report 6th October
This week the Oundle School Girls played nineteen matches winning fifteen, drawing one, and losing only three.
The 1st XI played in one of their closest matches so far against a very strong Cheltenham XI. The standard of play was very high throughout. They started very strongly with some accurate passing up front, and created a 2-0 lead. However, just before half time Cheltenham managed to claw one goal back making it 2-1. Despite coming out strongly after the break the girls conceded another goal. It did not stay this way for long, and they scored another two. During the rest of the game they put up their best defence but unfortunately let in another goal, winning the game 4-3. Most valuable player was awarded to Jessica Hume (N) for scoring 2 of the 4 goals, with Annabel Cooke (K) and Lucy Taylor (W) also putting one each past the goal keeper.
The 2nd XI also played Cheltenham in a close game. However, our attacking skills were too much for their defence putting 3 goals past them, and despite the best efforts of the defence they let in a good strike from their attack. The most valuable player was Tessa Wharton (Sn) for her excellent play during the game.
The 3rds. 4ths and 5ths all won their games scoring a total of 12 goals between the 3 teams, and all keeping a clean sheet.
The U16 A played against Cheltenham; they were the better team throughout
and had many scoring opportunities. Our attacking flair and tough defence
were dominant all through the game, but could only produce a 1-1 draw. The
Bs proved that they were the better team against Rugby winning 6-0. And the
Cs playing Trent Bs, who they had previously lost to 1-0, made the most of
our opportunities this time winning 3-1. Most valuable player went to Hannah
Gliksten (N) for stepping in to play for the team due to illnesses at late
notice.
The U15 As played against an unbeaten Cheltenham team but our skilful play
saw us winning the game 3-1. The Cs and Ds were also successful beating Rugby
2-0 and Trent 4-0 respectively.
The U14 teams had mixed results. The As and Bs both played Cheltenham. The As put on an awesome show of attack to score 5 goals, but let in 2 to win the game 5-2. The Bs followed the As’ example and also won 4-0 with the most valuable player being Alice Rockall (W). The Cs, Ds and Es all played Rugby in really close games, winning 1-0, losing 2-1, and drawing 0-0 respectively.
The U14 boys A XI played a new fixture against Loughborough Grammar School. The game was close, but Oundle came through victorious taking the game 1-0. The Es and Fs were both against Uppingham. The Es winning 2-1 and the Fs losing a tough game 2-0.

September 29th/30th, 2007
On Saturday 29th Oundle School Rugby Club played Stowe School, and the day proved to be a very successful one winning eight out of the nine fixtures against our Stoic counterparts. The senior sides ensured that that Oundle School’s record was 100% for the day. This started with the 1st XV winning 38 – 5. A fine performance by both backs and forwards saw the 2nd XV produce a 32 – 10 victory.
The 3rd XV played in action packed game, with the backs showing huge amounts of flair running in a feast of tries including one from a Wilkinson-esque cross field kick to finish up 48 – 12 winners. The 4th XV worked hard and secured a 41 – 7 win with the forwards scrummaging well, giving good ball which was utilised by the strong running backs.
Away the junior section produced some thrilling running rugby being led by the highly talented U15 age group who amassed over 150 points in the three games played. The Colts unfortunately went down, but showed commitment and exerted a sustained period of pressure in Stowe’s 22 towards the end of the game but could not mange to convert the pressure into points. The Colts Bs worked well as a team, which allowed a very expansive game to be played, running in some high-quality tries.
The JC A XV had a scrappy and disjointed first half against spirited opposition who rucked hard to turn over some Oundle ball. The second half saw Oundle put the points on the board and run out 48 – 7 winners. The JC Bs lengthened their unbeaten run in a match which saw three referees! An injury to the designated referee saw Mr H Roberts step in and take over the whistle in the rather unusual refereeing outfit of a suit until a replacement was found! The match itself saw the JC Bs dominate with both forwards and backs running hard, scoring 10 tries, including a hat trick for Ward (Laxton) finishing 56 – 5 winners. The JC Cs ran out 58 – 7 winners and produced some excellent running rugby which was vindicated by the fact that 6 of the tries were scored by the wingers.
In addition to the Stowe fixtures there were games for the JC D and JC E XVs against Oakham and Bedford respectively, both of which finished as wins for Oundle School. The JC D beat Oakham 31 -17 and JC E beat Bedford 71 – 0.
Oundle Hockey Club Report 29/09/07
The Oundle School Boys and Girls Hockey teams had a memorable weekend playing against Oakham, Uppingham and Stowe, wining sixteen out of nineteen fixtures.
The 1st XI put on high quality display of attacking skills linked with a strong defence to beat Oakham 3-0. Oundle dominated from the start playing a faster more dynamic game. However, luck was not with the team in the first half, with shots hitting the post and deflections going wide, making the half time score 0-0. Nevertheless, the second half brought the deserved goals, the first from Alice Wilson, the second a short corner strike from Alice Banks and the final goal, a fantastic counter attack put away by Annabel Cooke.
The 2nd XI also produced a fine performance against Oakham. Oundle were the stronger team throughout and simply outplayed Oakham to win by five unanswered goals. The 3rd XI also put on a strong performance. Oundle were the best team during the whole game, scoring three goals against a tough defence and a water-tight Oundle defence kept a clean sheet. The 4th team also played Oakham, scoring 4 goals and not conceding any. The 5th XI played against Uppingham, winning 2-1.
The U16s had mixed results, the A team were against a very strong Oakham team, the 5-1 scoreline not doing the Oundle effort justice. The B team played extremely well winning 6-0.
Our U15As in a close game made the most of their chances and won the game 2-1. The B team, however, also played Oakham but lost 2-1. The Ds against Uppingham scored two unanswered goals. The U14s won two of the three matches against Oakham.
The U14 boys hockey teams were all victorious against Stowe. With the As winning 4-1, the Bs winning 2-0, and the Cs 5-1. The Ds and Es also had strong performances and both won.

Tuesday 25th September
Another fine performance by the 1st XI against a top university side. It was a high intensity match but we were not intimidated and dominated throughout. There was nothing on the score board until the last third when unfortunately they were able to score from a quick break. It was not long, however, before we equalised with an excellent goal from Annabel Cooke, making the final score a 1-1 draw. Having the majority of the possession throughout we were disappointed not to come away with a victory, but we do remain unbeaten. This match saw several new players join the squad and all of them stepped up well to the challenge.
September 22nd/23rd, 2007
Tuesday 18th September saw the Squash 1st and 2nd teams in action against Uppingham School, with Oundle showing some superior tactical awareness and excellent fitness to come out on top, winning 4 games to 1 in both matches.
Wednesday 19th September saw the U13 A and B sides travelling away to play Kings College Cambridge. The U13A XV played in a thrilling end to end encounter, showing great passion and commitment to come back from 12 – 5 down to 12 – 12, where the scores remained level until 4 minutes from the end when fly half Sam Olver (Berrystead) dropped a goal from the edge of the 22 to take the scores to 15 – 12.
On Saturday 22nd September Oundle School Rugby Club played the first of two fixtures against Radley School. The highlight of the day being the 1st XVs emphatic victory over their Radley counterparts, who had won both their previous game of the season. Radley always provide us with a very stern challenge and we have to be at our very best to beat them. The game proved a tense affair with the Oundle pack dominating the early exchanges. However Radley's defence remained secure throughout. Although there were many mistakes by both teams the game made an intriguing spectacle of attack and counter attack. The game was tied 0-0 at half time. After the interval Radley made some sustained attacks culminating in a score in the corner by the Radley left winger, the try went unconverted. Oundle responded magnificently with a well worked try through Henry Spurrier (B) with a superb touchline conversion by Sam Rose (StA) Oundle recorded a memorable win 7-5 much to the delight of a large home crowd.
The Junior Colts B XV continued their unbeaten season, winning a tight affair against Radley. As with the 1st XV the JC Bs were 0 – 0 at half time although had applied more pressure during the first half. The second half saw Oundle continue their pressure and scored two converted tries, capitalising on Radley mistakes. Radley came back scoring a try of their own, but some good defence meant Oundle finished the game 14 – 5 winners.
This week all the girls’ hockey teams had tough matches, with 8 teams out of 11 winning against Kimbolton and Trent.
The 1st XI played against Trent. It was not the best first half performance where our standards dropped notably to those of the opposition, but a regrouping at half time lead to a vast improvement of the 2nd half with significant pressure and several scoring opportunities were created. A clinical strike from Alice Banks off a short corner produced the winning goal.
The 2nd XI were in action against Kimbolton 1st XI. Oundle defence was steadfast and stopped the attacking flair of Kimbolton forwards. Oundle's attacking move lead to a clinical finish to seal a superb display, coming through victors winning the game 1-0. The 3rd XI played against Trent's 2nd XI, and they were a little over-awed by Trents’ fast paced game, losing the first half 2-0. They recovered sufficiently in the second half, picking up the pace and pressure, but unfortunately lost the close contested game 3-1.
