Ngecho to Oundle

Posted on 09/02/10

In a bold new initiative, Oundle is inviting 10 pupils and 2 staff from a Kenyan school to visit us in June 2010.

The group from Ngecho Secondary School will be accompanied by a staff member of the Kenyan RFU, who are also backing the visit, with the support of the UK based charity Touraid.

Andy Berry, CEO of Touraid, said “We’re delighted to be involved in this project, which is a new direction for us. The strength of Oundle’s continued strong commitment to Ngecho and other Kenyan Schools is the perfect foundation for such a link.”

While in Oundle, the group will take part in a number of workshops that play to Oundle’s strengths – Science, Design and Technology, Drama and Sports – working with Oundle pupils and pupils from other local schools. It is hoped that as part of the visit, we can begin projects with the Ngecho community that we can continue on a return visit to Kenya in October 2010.

As always, we expect that the Oundle pupils involved will learn as much from the visit as the Ngecho pupils. Chris Rothera, who visited Ngecho in October 2009, said “We’re really looking forward to welcoming the Ngecho pupils here. When we visited the school in October, it was amazing to see how focussed and inspired the pupils were”. Emily Keston, who also visited in 2009, said “We’ve formed a committee of teachers and pupils, and want to make sure the Ngecho pupils get the most out of their time here”.

Oundle has strong links with Kenyan schools, going back to 2001. We visit Murindati and Kimbo primary schools near Gilgil most years, and have more recently begun links with Aitong School near the Masai Mara, together with Ngecho, where we sponsor 10 pupils per year through the Harambee Schools Kenya organisation.
