Theology meets Science

Thomas Miller (Ldr) writes:

On Tuesday 7th November the Religious Studies Department joined forces with the Science Society to welcome Professor Peter Lipton of Cambridge University.

Professor Lipton is Head of the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science, and his talk, "Managing the Conflict - The Tension between Religion and Science" reflected on a major focus of his ideas. There can be little doubt that many people have pondered over this issue at some point in their life but Professor Lipton offered a convincing intellectual argument for allowing both religion and science to co-exist.

The fact that Professor Lipton is a Jew as well as a scientist made his opinion that not all religious doctrine has to be believed particularly fascinating. He offered a distinction between acceptance and belief, arguing that one can overcome the inconsistencies of science and religion by not believing certain aspects of religious texts such as the Bible.

Professor Lipton was an engaging and lively speaker, and we are privileged to have a speaker of such distinction coming to Oundle.
