Societies
In addition to participation in plays and concerts, the School offers a huge range of other extra-curricular opportunities for pupils. There are some fifty societies, ranging from Classics to Croquet, and from Astronomy to an Amnesty support group. All major academic departments run their own societies and some offer two, one at senior and one at junior level. Meetings often welcome distinguished visitors, a notable feature of the Law and Cinema Appreciation Societies, for example. A School Inter-House Debating Competition takes place each year at both senior and junior level.
The Societies Fair is staged in the Great Hall at the beginning of each academic year and enables new pupils to discover what is on offer; they can make jewellery, play War Games, involve themselves in photography or robotics, build computers, play chess, learn how to cook, or write for Off the Cuff (the School's newspaper), or even host a show on the School's own radio station, OSCAR, during its two-month-long broadcasting periods each year.
