English Literature

Head of Department: T.P. Hipperson, MA (Durham)
Course Specification: OCR H071/H471

In studying literature pupils will be required to evaluate reflections on the human experience, as well as to develop precise critical and analytical skills. The English Literature course focuses upon key literary texts from a range of genres and periods. An enthusiasm for reading and a willingness to discuss texts in detail are essential requirements for this course. Pupils consider aspects of language such as style, tone and intention, as well as the social, political and cultural contexts in which the works were produced. The course therefore touches upon a wide range of disciplines, and develops the ability to present ideas with precision, both orally and on paper. Assessment is through both examination and coursework.
