At Oundle, all pupils have the opportunity to study Dance as a Vol, and the Sixth Form can study Dance as a Sports option. Pupils at Oundle study a variety of styles and are given the opportunity to showcase their dances with performances which take place either in the Great Hall or the Stahl Theatre.

Classes take place in the Dance Studio, which has a sprung dance floor, a fully mirrored wall and natural lighting, making it the perfect setting for dance training. Workshops with touring dance and drama companies who are performing at the Stahl, and with dancers from companies such as the Rambert, are also offered to provide alternative repertoire to inspire and innovate and allow the pupils to explore their own creativity.

Dance comprises several styles such as lyrical which blends fluid and graceful moves with continuous turns and extended movements. Jazz often uses strong and dramatic movements, including body isolations and contractions. Hip-hop is a wide-ranging style that has evolved from the hip-hop culture and includes various styles such as popping and locking. Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres, including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.

Pupils find joy in expressing themselves through the art of dance, as well as increased brain stimulation, boosted self-esteem, improved fitness levels and the sense of accomplishment that comes with learning a new skill. Our aim is to provide high quality teaching that allows pupils to learn, grow and develop to the best of their abilities, to create an inspirational and fun environment that encourages excellence, and to provide pupils with life skills that can be carried over into whatever career path they may choose.
